Why a sprinkler head may stay down
A sprinkler head that will not pop up usually points to a pressure, debris, head, valve, or piping problem. On older residential systems in Grosse Pointe, more than one issue can appear at the same time.
Start with the rest of the zone
If every head on the zone is weak, the problem is probably not one individual sprinkler. A partially opening valve, leak, pinched line, or supply issue can reduce pressure across the entire zone. If neighboring heads operate normally, the individual head or nozzle is more likely at fault.
Common causes
Dirt can pack around the riser. Nozzles and screens can clog. A mower or vehicle can damage the body. Roots can shift piping or restrict a line. A leaking fitting can also steal enough pressure that the last heads on a zone barely rise.
When repair makes sense
Replacing a damaged head is straightforward when the rest of the zone has normal pressure. Repeatedly replacing heads will not solve a valve, pipe, or pressure problem, so diagnosis matters before parts are changed.

A quick diagnostic sequence
Run the affected zone and compare the problem head with the two nearest sprinklers. If nearby heads rise normally, inspect the individual head for packed soil, grass around the riser, a damaged body, clogged nozzle or screen. If several heads are weak, stop treating it as an individual-head problem and look for a zone-wide pressure loss.
What low pressure can tell you
A sudden change is more suspicious than a zone that has always been weak. New soggy areas, bubbling water or one unusually wet spot can point toward a lateral-line break. If there is no visible leak, the zone valve may not be opening fully.
