Sprinkler Controller Says Running but No Water: What Does It Mean?

Short answer: the display saying a zone is running only means the controller believes it is commanding that station. No water can still be caused by controller output, field wiring, a common wire, solenoid, valve, shutoff/water supply, pressure or downstream piping.
Do not assume the controller is the problem
A modern controller can display a normal watering cycle even when the electrical signal never reaches the valve. Conversely, correct voltage at the valve shifts attention toward the solenoid, valve and hydraulic side.
A useful diagnostic order
- Confirm the correct station and schedule.
- Verify water supply and irrigation shutoffs.
- Test controller station output.
- Check the common and station-wire path.
- Test the solenoid and field splices.
- Confirm valve operation.
- Evaluate pressure and downstream piping if the valve opens.
Why only one dead zone is an important clue
If every other zone works normally, a whole-property water-supply failure becomes less likely. A single dead station more strongly focuses diagnosis on that station’s output, conductor, splice, solenoid or valve.
