Start by deciding whether the problem affects one zone or the whole system
If every zone is dead, check the irrigation water supply and controller power before digging in the yard. If only one zone fails, the problem is more likely isolated to that valve, solenoid or field wiring.
Check the controller
Confirm the display is powered, the date and time are reasonable, and the controller is not in rain-delay or off mode. Try running a zone manually from the controller.
Check the water supply
A controller can operate normally while the irrigation shutoff remains closed. Spring start-ups are a common time for this confusion.
When testing is needed
Voltage testing can determine whether the controller is sending power to a valve. If power leaves the controller but the valve does not respond, field wiring, splices or the solenoid become more likely.

Whole-system failure checklist
Confirm the irrigation shutoff is open, the controller has power, and the controller is not paused by rain delay or sensor input. Then attempt a manual station run. If the controller appears normal but no zones operate, check whether the system uses a master valve or pump and whether the common wire is intact.
If only one station is dead
A single failed station points away from the main water supply. Compare controller voltage on that station with a known working station. If controller output is normal, test at the valve to determine whether the signal is being lost through the field wiring or splice.
